Harry Potter: The Exhibition

On Friday September 2, Miss Michelle and I led a group of 6 lucky readers into NYC to view Harry Potter: The Exhibition. Each teen read a minimum of 350 pages in order to enter to win this prize. We had the opportunity to see a Nimbus 2000, Harry's wand, a real Hogwarts uniform and much much much more! Entire scenes and sets were assembled and really gave us inside into the world of Harry Potter.

After we viewed all things Harry, we walked down the block to enjoy pizza at the legendary John's Pizzeria.

6 lucky teens won the chance to record their own professional demo CD! John Machadro, Audio Division Co-Chair at Five Town's College came out to BFL to record and mix tracks from our teens. Last night 11 BRAVE teens came down to BFL to participate in my version of the hit MTV show. Contestants completed every challenge with smiles on their faces and the best sportsmanship! 4 teens at a time had to compete in challenges like: Balloon Shaving, Blind Beauty (painting a partners nails while blindfolded), Banana Golf, M and M's Surprise (the surprise was the M and M's were covered in Ketchup!) and more! I am not sure how silent we were, but fun and laughs were surely had by all!

Project Duck Tape

On Monday night 14 teens came out to participate in "Project Duck Tape." The assignment? In three separate rounds, each lasting 15 minutes, create a flower, a coin purse or wallet and finally any creation solely out of duct tape and using no other supplies-not even scissors! Working in groups, teens came up with truly amazing and fantastic projects!! GREAT JOB!

Mockingjay Has Landed!

As many of you know, this past Tuesday brought the long awaited release of the 3rd and final installment in the Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins.

I was lucky enough to get a chance to meet the author and hear her read the first few pages of the novel. Barnes and Noble Bookstore in Huntington hosted the event and the store was packed with excited fans of all ages! I saw many fans proudly wearing home made "District 12" tee shirts and other Hunger Games paraphernalia. Despite the crowds, the author was cool, calm, collected and modest as she greeted eager readers. Due to a wrist injury, Collins was unable to physically sign books, so she stamped copies with a specially made stamp!

What's Cooking @ Your Library

This past Saturday a group of 14 students gathered here at BFL to cook up some new recipes. Inspired by the Winter Reading Olympics Club, the recipes featured international ingredients and flavors. On the menu: Cuban Black Bean Soup, Vegetable Fried Rice, Italian Style Panini, and a Graham Cracker Napoleon made with fresh whipped cream and sliced strawberries. I am hungry just writing about it!

I still can't believe 2009 is over! Where did the time go? I certainly spent a lot of my time reading some exciting and powerful books including Catching Fire, Scat, When You Reach Me, and The Eternal Smile (just to name a few of my personal favorites).

Wii Games are Back!

On Monday afternoon, 15 kids spend some of their vacation time at the "Resort." That is, at the Wii Resort! Playing Nintendo Wii Sports Resort, kids battled their friends at sword play, table tennis, and bowling on the library's large projection screen. Great fun was had by all, be sure to join us next time!

All entries, along with official entry form, must be dropped off at the library between 10:00am-12:45pm. No exceptions will be made for lateness. Judging begins 1:00pm. There is still time to enter! Frangi Comes to the Library!

The winner of our online "Coolest Pet" photo contest came down to the library on Thursday afternoon. Anthony and Alyssa F. brought their dog Frangi in for photos and to claim their prize! Frangi happily posed for pictures as the kids told me how they had adopted him from Bide-a-wee in Westhampton Beach. Look What's Cooking @ BFL!

Wednesday night delicious aromas filled the library as Miss Deb taught our teens how to prepare an Apple Cheesy Chicken Barbecue Quesadilla. Missed the program or hungry for more? Here is the recipe:
Ingredients:
(Makes One Quesadilla)

1 Tortilla
1/4 Thinly sliced green apple
1 1/2 table spoons BBQ sauce
3 table spoons shredded chicken
3 table spoons shredded cheese- Cheddar, jack or blue

To Make:

Spread tortilla with BBQ sauce
Layer with Apple, chicken and cheese
Spray pan with cooking spray while pan is heating
Fold tortilla over and brown both sides in skillet

Enjoy!

BFL Presents "The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs"

This past Friday, a readers theater performance of Jon Scieszka's "The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs" was presented here at the library. Using scripts and the art of improvisation, students brought life to this funny fractured fairly tale. Bravo to all of our budding actors and actresses!!

SAT HELP

The Patchogue Medford Library has a plethora of spots available in their SAT prep class titled:

"Tips to Boost Your SAT Score: Summer Cram Sessions."

Non Patchogue-Medford library patrons may now register for this program. Registration must be done in person. There are two sessions available:
Saturday, August 1st from 10-2
Monday, August 17th from 4:30-8:30
The class will cover math, reading and writing from the SAT. There is a 25 dollar fee to be paid in cash only and it includes a study book! Please pack a lunch/dinner and they will provide some mouthwatering snacks and some refreshing water!

BFL Students Help Scientists

Brookhaven Free Library is helping scientists who are studying the planet Mars. Scientists from the Arizona State University and NASA are comparing rock samples collected across the Earth, with samples that have been collected from the mysterious "Red" Planet.
Tuesday night, 16 students came down to the library with rock samples-Measurements were taken, samples were cataloged and rocks were described in terms of color, shape and striations. After much discussion, the group voted on one sample to send. Thanks to Emily C. for finding a great rock and all those who participated!

Is your summer filled with swimming, outdoor activities,BBQ's, and family get togethers? Come gain the confidence and knowledge to learn how to take action in the event of an emergency. The South Country Ambulance Company is coming to BFL Thursday July 23 at 7:00pm or Saturday July 25th at 10:00am, to teach some basics of safety and CPR. While this is NOT a certificate course, the knowledge learned can be helpful in many situations that could arise during the active and busy summer season!

Mars Scientists Need Your Help!

Help to further the scientific understanding of the mysterious red planet by looking for an interesting or unusual rock between 2 and 6 inches wide. Rocks will be mailed to scientists working with NASA and compared to those from the surface of Mars. Click on the banner above for more details....
